We engaged in our first effort, as Momentum Dance Project, to be a part of a cause in which we were passionate about. Jenni Kokes referred us to this walk in which donated all proceeds to the Alexandra House. We are so grateful that she did. This was the perfect first event we could have attended to share our support.
Though it was a beautiful and easy morning, the reason why we were there was not. The mission of the Alexandra House is to empower victims of domestic and sexual violence, and inspire social change, through education, support, and advocacy. We were there to recognize and make known a complex issue that is incredibly prevalent in our society. The statistics shared were stunning and the stories we heard brought us to tears.
They had installations near the stage, silhouettes of women and children who had been victims of domestic violence and that are no longer here with us. Upon each silhouette was a short explanation of their death, their name and the dates they were on this earth. I can't stop thinking about these images, wondering about the lives they lived before and the terror they must have gone through on that day. I pray for their families and I will continue to advocate for victims of sexual violence and domestic abuse.
The Alexandra House provides legal advocacy, therapy and support services, violence prevention programs, abuse in later life resources, and community education and professional training. If you could not attend, please consider donating or join us for our next volunteering or outreach event regarding this issue.
